The people of the district felt necessity of a law college in the year 1978. A meeting was held on 23rd July 1978 under Presidentship of Late Prabhat Narayan Choudhury in Mahendra Narayan Chaudhury Girls School. In the meeting a unanimous decision was taken to establish a Law College in the area and a committee was constituted to materialize the object. A working committee was constituted in the general meeting held on 27th March 1980. An executive committee was constituted under the chairmanship of Late Surendra Nath Sarma. On 19th May 1981 application was submitted to Gauhati University for permission to begin preliminary classes of LL.B. in the academic year 1981-82 with copy to Bar Councial of India.
At the beginning the preliminary LL.B. classes were held in Nalbari Satra M.V. School, Nalbari. Three daughters of hon’ble social worker Late Adyanath Sarma of Nalbari donated in the name of their father a land measuring 4 bighas to the Nalbari Law College at Adya Bharati Nagar, Nalbari Town on 17th July 1982. Accordingly permanent building was constructed and the Law College was shifted to its own land in 1982.

Nalbari Law College has the vision to offer the quality legal education and to generate legal experts for the services to the nation. Law is no longer confined to its traditional paradigm of being identified as a mere discourse which controls external human conducts and ensures social justice.
Law is slowly revealing itself as an essential medium of change as it has proved to be a constructive and useful mechanism for implementation of economic policy, thereby strengthening the foundation of economy. In view of this, Nalbari Law College will not only imbibe the tradition of multidisciplinary approach to the legal studies and research but also will make a genuine endeavour to propagate such approach to both the privileged and unprivileged learners and thus strive to emancipate such interdisciplinary culture from the elitist dogmatism and carry the same to the grassroots level of the society. The Institution will earnestly aspire to strengthen the foundation of democratic and social values in our young generation and mould them into “social engineers” who will work towards building a “New India”.
Further the College has to plan to set up legal clinic and to provide clinical legal education classes for the ends of justice and to serve people of this locality.

Nalbari Law College is permanently affiliated to Gauhati University and approved by the Bar Council of India (BCI), New Delhi. The College also Received Concurrence from Higher Education Kahilipara,Dispur.
